What can I say. Getting as close to Gary as I did was one of the greatest benefits that accrued to me from my membership in the 5 year club. Later he was also a good friend to my older sister BC. She shared some stories over the years about their adventures. But all of you knew him too. I have often grinned thinking about some of our misadventures. That's what these pages and our coming together is for; not just those of us who make it through but all of us. Picture this:

Gary and me in my Daddy's "62 Ford wagon, a couple of surfboards hangin' out the back, somewhere east of New Bern on old 70,
Saturday morning (really a continuation of Friday prom night-buzz included at no extra charge)Jr.-Sr. weekend, the sun just clearing the trees on it's way up, It's the first time I remember hearing the "Rascals" sing "It's a Beautiful Morning" ---talk about cosmic!!!

I remember Gary in high school as one of my best friends. We had a little pack that ran together. He always made things fun. What I remember also is Gary sitting in that little shop about a block behind Pearson's dept. store. It was the first Bet's surf shop. I think Gary was instrumental in getting Bert involved in that business. Gary actually made the first surf boards that Bert sold. He was a great guy who left us way to early. I remember him fondly.

Althugh I know Gary is gone it does not seem quite possible that he will not be with us as we celebrate 40 years. As kids, we all ran together, that relationship continued into high school (for me, when I visited) and into college. Probably saw him last sometime in the late 80's. I was saddened when I heard of his death, after the fact. Had I known in time, I would have driven to Kinston for his funeral. He was such a special guy. What a waste. I so wish he were here to share in our old (slightly older?) age with us.
