NANCY AND I WERE VERY GOOD FRIENDS. HER DAD WAS FIRE
CHIEF BEFORE MINE. SHE ALWAYS MADE ME LAUGH. I SPENT
THE NIGHT WITH HER QUITE A BIT. WHEN WE WERE IN THIRD
GRADE I SPENT THE NIGHT WITH HER AND FORGOT TO TAKE OFF
MY PJ BOTTOMS. I WORE THEM UNDER MY DRESS AND SHE NEVER
LET ME FORGET IT. MY MOM SAT BESIDE HER IN THE DOCTOR'S
OFFICE AFTER SHE WAS DIAGNOSED AND SHE HAD SUCH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. SHE WAS ONE OF MY ROLE MODELS AFTER
MY BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS AND I MISS HER STILL.

Nancy died August 16, 1985.
There was only one like her. I first met Nancy in elementary school. Her father was the Fire Chief. How exciting. We got to go for our personal tour of the fire station one time. She had a wonderful family. Nancy loved life.

It has taken some reflection to try and figure how to describe my view of Nancy.

I feel transparent is the best way to describe it.
She had a knowing smile, like she could see your heart of hearts.
Whatever mischief I was up to she KNEW and UNDERSTOOD!

Also knew her family and Nancy as far back as I can remember.

Miss you Nancy.

Nancy was a great friend of mine in elementary school. First, she was famous because her dad was the fire chief
and she had the first pj party that I ever went to and
we danced (it was sort of dancing) to Franki Valle and
the F our Seasons and I can't remember if it was Sherry
or Walk Like a Man but it didn't matter because they were
all alike but I would see someone at the train station or in a Mall and I would think,,"Gosh, she reminds me of Nancy."
It was great when girls just rolled around and laughed
and had fun at their first p.j. party... I don't even
remember who was there but I was glad that I was.

I was reading through old annuals last night - starting with Harvey Jr. High's "Imp", through the GHS annuals (even though I had moved away, Jess Roper faithfully carried two annuals in High School, one for her and one for me, then mailed them when they were signed).

Nancy was always there, in every single one of them. Complimenting me in the early days - you know, "sweet personality, how much she enjoyed knowing me" and growing in the High School years, relating shared experiences when I visited, how much she wished I still lived in Kinston, etc. With memories flowing back as I look forward to this reunion, memories of my time with Nancy surface. I am so sorry she will not be with us all to share the experience. She will be there, for me, in spirit.

Nancy and I were good friends for years and one thing that stands out is the time I was going to drive her mustang. I was so excited and I know we were probably only 16 and knew everything! I just knew driving a stick shift would be a piece of cake. Well, it wasn't. I stopped the car at a stop sign at the top of a hill and when the coast was clear I was about to take off and the car started rolling back....OMG! We were screaming and I was freaking out and about that time another car came up behind us and I knew I would roll back into that car if something didn't change. Well, she pulled the emergency brake, turned off the car after putting it in neutral and then we both got out of the car and switched seats. Whew! That was a close one. I wonder who that was behind us.

I loved Nancy. We attended Teachers Memorial together and that's when I met her. I spent hundreds of afternoons and Saturdays at her house. Her Mom was precious and treated me like her daughter. I remember Nancy's laugh - loud and hearty!! Her brothers were fun, too - Joe and Denny. I stood in awe of her Dad - he was precious. What a great family they were. I last saw her in a store here in Greenville and she was in uniform. I hugged her and said 'we have just got to get together and get caught up!' We never got that chance. I love and miss you Nancy!
